Dolls for Charity

Pukeiti Garden Pukekos, New Plymouth, NZ.

October 2003 and 2004

The Carrington Road pukekos have had a very successful breeding season – a combination of the wet spring and the increasing number of farmers establishing riparian strips meaning they were relatively free of disturbance from stock! This weekend eight of the new chicks accompanied by two adult helpers went to Pukeiti for a picnic and enclosed are three photos of them enjoying the pleasant surrounds.

The first photo shows the pukeko chicks picnicking down at their favourite lake and who said pukekos don’t climb trees. The second is of them enjoying a rest by the lodge lawn and finally, catching their breath by the gatehouse before their long walk home. I thoroughly enjoyed making them and once again would like to thank you for allowing us to use them as an avenue of fund raising.

Thank You,

Heather Robson, New Plymouth

If you'd like to purchase a ready made pukeko drop me a line and I'll pass it on to Heather :)

Diplomatic Bazaar, Santiago, Chile.

9 November 2002 & 2003

Early in 2002 Michelle Mann, married to a kiwi Diplomat, living in Chile, at the base of the Andes Mountains, contacted us to ask if it was possible to sell dolls made from our patterns at their annual charity bazaar. "Yes!" we said "With great pleasure!!" We sent off a wee complimentry parcel of registered birth tags, fabric and Shazza Sheep (pictured) to check out the sights of Santiago.

About 60 embassies took part in the bazaar, with every sheep and kiwi sold! Michelle and her daughter must have burnt the midnight oil to stitch these armfulls of kiwi and sheep cloth dolls.

Michelle writes "The Bazaar was a great success, attracting record numbers (around 7000 on the day) and also a record profit, which has already been spent on around 15 different projects.

"From rebuilding the kitchen in an old people's home, to purchasing 14 violins and a cello for an after-school music programme in a poor area, to building bathrooms in a home for children whose parents are in prison, and equipping a sewing workshop for women in a drug rehabilitation programme.

"Thanks so much for your support and for helping make the New Zealand stand such an attraction!!!"

If you'd like to support charities such as this one by making a cloth doll do email me!

Check out the Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust web page, supported by sewers who purchase registered tags from us :)
